Fresh industrial action looms as resident doctors are balloted over pay

A new round of industrial action to protest over doctors’ pay in England is being considered, with the BMA starting to issue ballot papers to its resident doctor members.

The BMA is asking them to vote on whether or not they want to take industrial action after last week’s announcement by the government of the latest pay rises for NHS staff, described by the BMA as “derisory.”1

The government said its “substantial” pay award for resident doctors will mean an average 5.4% rise (made up of a 4% increase and a £750 consolidated payment) and a 4% rise for consultants, SAS doctors, and GPs.
